About Mai Po Nature Reserve
Nestled at the northwestern corner of Hong Kong, the Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay wetlands are designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. It is also listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The natural shallow estuarine area has extensive intertidal mudflats, mangroves, gei wais (traditional shrimp ponds) and fishponds. Mai Po Nature Reserve provides food and habitat for a variety of species. Some 50,000–60,000 wintering waterbirds form a breathtaking scene as they make their annual winter migration to roost in the Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay Ramsar site which is praised as Hong Kong's "Birds' Paradise".
Since 1984, Mai Po Nature Reserve has been managed by the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong (WWFHK) with support from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. WWFHK has been actively carrying out different educational activities to promote public awareness on wetland and ecology.
