Modelling the Urban System: The Case of Greater Shanghai
Urban models provide a simplified abstraction of the real-world development in city regions. This seminar introduces how urban models are developed to (1) comprehensively unravel the nature of increasingly complex, interconnected urban issues and (2) subsequently devise policy solutions to turn these urban challenges into opportunities over time. The model applications and future research agenda in Greater Shanghai will be summarised and presented, covering various policy areas of transport, land and economy.
Dr. Tianren YANG is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include urban growth mechanisms and urban systems models. His current research agenda focuses on the pattern detection, quantitative attribution and predictive modelling of urban development (e.g. real estate market, workplace-residence choices and social welfare).
Dr Yang received his PhD in architecture (applied urban modelling) from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in urban design from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and an MEng in urban planning and a BEng in landscape architecture from Tongji University. As a chartered planner, he endeavours to apply research insights to practical decision-making. He was awarded Geospatial World 50 Rising Stars and has been included on the Forbes 30 Under 30 China list for Science and Healthcare.
