Urban design is undergoing a fundamental transformation from predominantly experience-based and manually operated practices toward a more scientific, measurable, and computational mode of design. Computational urban design emerges from the integration of design and science, introducing data, evidence, and algorithms into the understanding, evaluation, and generation of urban space.
Over the past decade, computational urban design has progressively developed along three interconnected dimensions: data-informed analysis, evidence-based decision-making, and algorithm-driven design generation. More recently, advances in artificial intelligence have been increasingly integrated into these three dimensions, enabling more intelligent analysis, evidence-based evaluation, and design generation. This deeper integration of artificial intelligence is strengthening the analytical, evaluative, and generative capabilities of urban design. This evolution is transforming computational urban design from a collection of digital tools into a more integrated, intelligent, and scientifically grounded methodology. Computational urban design is expected to contribute to a broader paradigm shift in urban design, advancing it toward a more scientific and computational discipline.
Professor at College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University. He received Ph.D. from The University of Hong Kong and worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Future Cities Laboratory, ETH Zurich. As the Principal investigator of 4 national-level research projects, he has published 85 peer-reviewed journal articles, including 4 ESI Highly Cited Papers, and listed among the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists. His research interests include computational urban design, quantitative urban morphology, and urban big data.
