Lunch Talk Series by Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) Thrust, HKUST (GZ) - Multi-scale Seamless Flood Forecasting多尺度无缝隙洪水预报

12:00pm - 1:00pm
Venue: W2-201 (Zoom Meeting ID: 857 7183 8306 Code: 20240411)

Supporting the below United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:支持以下聯合國可持續發展目標:支持以下联合国可持续发展目标:

Current flood monitoring and forecasting face multiple challenges, including independent predictions of flash floods, river floods, and urban inundation using different models which overlook the highly interlinked hydrological processes and their cumulative effects within the watershed; and the lack of research on the interacting mechanisms of land use change and reservoirs/detention basins on flood processes, and their impacts on the predictability of floods at different lead times. These challenges have resulted in inconsistencies in flood intensity/frequency identification and significant uncertainties in forecasting.

The speaker will discuss his team's research in cross-scale flood modeling, mixed-resolution simulation, and the development of ensemble hydrological simulation and data assimilation for flood forecasting. This includes research and applications in integrating and seamlessly forecasting flash floods, river floods, and urban inundation from local to global scales, employing methods such as statistics, machine learning, and numerical simulations.

Prof. Huan WU
Sun Yat-sen University

Wu Huan is a Professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Sun Yat-sen University. He is recognized through the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program" and selected as a member of the National "Overseas Talents" program. Additionally, he is Deputy Director at the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Climate Change and Natural Disaster Studies and leads the Extreme Hydrology and Meteorology Numerical Simulation Team at Sun Yat-sen University. He earned his Ph.D. from the School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University in 2007. From 2008 to 2016, Prof. Wu worked at esteemed institutions such as the University of Montana, NASA, and the University of Maryland. During this period, he held significant roles, including Chief Scientist for NASA's Earth Science and Disaster Program, and led projects such as the Global Precipitation Program and the Energy and Water Cycle Program.

Prof. Wu's research focuses on hydro-meteorology and multi-scale flood process simulation and forecasting. He independently developed the DRIVE flood model and the GHS-F real-time flood monitoring and forecasting system. The DRIVE model has been internationally recognized as a milestone in global flood model development. Currently, he serves as the Vice Chair of the Global Flood Partnership (GFP) Leadership Committee and holds positions as an Associate Editor for prestigious international journals, including the Journal of Hydrometeorology, Remote Sensing, Frontiers in Big Data (Climate), and the Journal of Tropical Meteorology. Prof. Wu is an expert in natural disaster assessment for the Emergency Management Department of the People's Republic of China. He is also a member of the China Committee on Water Resources Remote Sensing and the CNC-IAHS Land-Atmosphere Relations Subcommittee.
