Interdisciplinary Program Office (IPO) Sustainability Seminar Series - Energy Transition for Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Energy is the enabler for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. The energy transition is an imperative. Acknowledging the need to move beyond the business-as-usual paradigm puts countries, in particular the emerging economies in Asia and the Pacific, under pressure in search for a new paradigm while maintaining their energy security and stable energy markets for macro-economic stability. The only option is to embrace a complete overhaul: the energy transition. The energy transition is going to be a long-term effort with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) as an interim measure to be on-track. This requires a change in mindset to put providing access to clean energy at the center while increasing renewable energy in the energy mix as well as energy efficiency.
Dr. Hongpeng Liu is the Director of the Energy Division at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Dr. Liu leads the energy team in ESCAP to promote regional energy cooperation with focus on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 7 in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. His work ranges from conducting policy studies, organizing intergovernmental meetings/policy dialogues, and providing advisory services to support member States on energy transition and sustainable energy development in Asia and the Pacific. Dr. Liu has over 30 years’ experience on sustainable energy. Prior to joining the United Nations, he served as government official in charge of energy policies and plans, new and renewable energy industry development in the central government of China
