In this seminar, the speaker is going to introduce the major content of ancient text(around 5th-3rd Century B.C.) Jing volume one and two (The Scripts,經上、經下) andJingshuo volume one and two (The Annotations經說上、經說下) in The Book of Mozi (墨子) that is relevant to philosophy of science. Mozi’s criteria on theory (舉, Ju), Causality (故,Gu), Laws (法, Fa), Invalid (誖, bo), Proposition (誹, Fei), Tautology (諄, Zhun), Researchhypothesis (必, Bi, script item 52), and idea of control experiment (methodology of同異交得放有無, identify the commonality and differences, and put the identified factor insituation that such factor exists, and in situation that such factor is absent, script item 89).The presentation will conclusion with juxtaposition with chapter 3 (theory) andchapter 4(Falsifiability) of Karl Popper’s The Logic of Scientific Discovery (Popper, 1935/1959).
