Hydrogen fuel cells offer key advantages such as high efficiency, high energy density, and zero emissions, making them highly promising for both transportation and stationary power applications. However, large-scale commercial deployment of fuel cells remains limited by several challenges, most notably, the high cost associated with the use of platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. In this talk, The speaker will begin by briefly introducing their efforts in developing low-Pt catalysts, including various uniquely nanostructured Pt nanowires, nanotubes, and single-atom configurations, which have significantly enhanced the activity and durability of Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. The main focus of the presentation will be on their research into PGM-free catalysts. Building on major breakthroughs in Fe/N/C catalysts achieved at INRS—where membrane electrode assembly (MEA) activity and performance have approached those of Pt-base! d systems—and in collaboration with industry partners, they have made promising progress in improving the stability of PGM-free catalysts. Finally, the speaker will present their recent research on electrocatalytic hydrogen production, including the development of Pt single-atom catalysts and non-precious metal catalysts for fresh water and seawater splitting.
