Platform Regulation: From the Perspective of Network Effects, Algorithms, and Big Data

Abstract:

Platform research has much focused on network effects, algorithms, and big data as the key factors for value creation. On that basis, people have developed platform strategies and designs in explaining how a platform creates value. However, from another perspective, platforms can also increase their market power by leveraging these three factors, leading to research on platform regulation. This presentation consists of three papers, which respectively study the practical problems encountered in platform regulation from the perspective of these three factors, including:

1) Algorithm Envelopment in Platform Markets;

2) An Open Big Data Policy and Financial Inclusion in a Platform Ecosystem;

3) Impact of the Super App on Platform Competition: Evidence from WeChat Mini Program.
