ABSTRACT

The development of efficient and scalable software systems is crucial for the growth of Industry 4.0 and its related applications, such as smart manufacturing and design technologies. In this talk, I will share our projects on developing such systems for automated robot operation, manipulation, and surveillance, with applications in diverse components of Industry 4.0. First, I will introduce our research framework, which focuses on the localization and perception of robotic systems. Then, I will discuss our research projects and related technologies deployed for industrial applications in four key aspects: 1. Robot simultaneous localization and mapping for navigation. 2. Factory robot planning. 3. Industrial robot manipulation and monitoring. 4. Industrial robotic surveillance and defects inspections. I will also share some insights on how robotic techniques will benefit automation and efficiency in Industry 4.0 and present some future works in this field. Overall, my talk will demonstrate how our research can contribute to the growth and success of Industry 4.0 by enabling more efficient, automated, and safe processes.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Kangcheng Liu is a senior robotic engineer and research fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his Doctor of Philosophy as the HKPFS awardee in Mechanical and Automation Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2022 with honors and received his B.E. from the Harbin Institute of Technology. He specializes in robotics and automation, vision/LiDAR-based robotics navigation, robotics localization and mapping, representation learning, computer graphics, data-efficient learning, 3D deep learning, medical imaging, and robotics scene understanding. He was invited to serve as the program community member of many international conferences including the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), the International Conference on Pattern Recognition, and the International Conference on Automation Science Engineering. He is actively engaged in various major engineering projects in both robotics and vision-based control, perception, and navigation. His first-authored works in both areas of robotics and 3D vision are widely published in Top-Tier journals and conferences including IJCV, CVPR, ECCV, ICRA, IROS, ACM MM, and many IEEE Transactions. He served as the program session chair of ICRA and IROS. He also served as the reviewer of more than 30 kinds of international journals and conferences including TRO, JFR, IJCV, TPAMI, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, ACM SIGGRAPH, etc.
