The performance at the surface of materials is of paramount relevance for many applications: ranging from catalysis, sensors or microelectronic devices to nanomedicine. The release of nanomaterials may also have an impact on the environment and on the health (toxicity and ecotoxicity); e.g., reactions of nanoparticles in the troposphere and in the stratosphere change the chemical balance of the atmosphere; may affect sea and continental waters or the soil; ultimately, human exposure to nanomaterials may result in several adverse effects.

Prof. Miguel A. Banares
Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain

Professor Miguel A. Banares is a Research Professor at the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). He is a member of the European Research Council and the CSIC Advisory Expert Panel, steering group member of the EU Nanosafety Cluster, project leader of SafeAir, and coordinator of two H2020 projects, CHAARISMA and NanoInformaTix. He was the deputy Vice President of CSIC and a recipient of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from University of Caen. He is the co-founder of ADParticles, a CSIC spin-off company and Editor-in-Chief of Catalysis Today. He has authored more than 250 publications and edited two books. His research on operando spectroscopy methods proved to be vital in understanding the bioactivities and toxicity pathways of nanomaterials. He was involved in several H2020 project related to nanosafety and nanotoxicity, including nanoMECommons, Biorima, NanoInformaTix, and CHARISMA.
