Abstract |
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received increasing application interest for the removal of organic pollutants as a polishing treatment for contaminated waters. However, the ubiquitous presence of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in raw and treated waters (natural and wastewaters) induces major sides effects. DOM exerts a strong reactivity towards radical species, scavenging effects which significantly impacts the efficiency of these technologies for the degradation of the targeted pollutants. Another major side effect is the production of halogenated DBPs as a resultant of the production of highly reactive halogen species. This presentation will focus on the reactivity of DOM with radical species generated from UV-based AOPs. The influence of the origin and character of DOM on their reactivity and subsequent transformation with hydroxyl, sulphate and chlorine radicals will be compared. The production of halogenated by-products i.e., AOX and specific DBPs will be discussed. |
Biography |
Dr. Jean-Philippe Croué is Professor in Environmental Science and Engineering at the University of Poitiers – France since 1989. He is now conducting his research at the Institute of Chemistry, Materials and Natural resources of Poitiers (IC2MP). He was on lay-off for the last 10 years. From September 2009 to September 2014 he was Professor at KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and developed his research activities at the Water Desalination and Reuse Centre. From September 2014 to December 2018 he was Professor at Curtin University and Director of the Curtin Water Quality Research Centre-Perth Australia. His research work is focusing on the structure, role and behaviour of Natural Organic Matter in natural systems and water treatment processes. |
