Green-Grey-Blue coupling system optimization in Sponge City construction.

The kernel of Sponge City is to develop a coupled green-grey-blue system which consists of green infrastructure at the source, grey infrastructure at the midway and receiving water bodies as the blue part at the terminal. In this talk, sponge city concept and policy in China was described first. Then a case study in Suzhou on how to optimize a coupled green-grey-blue system was introduced. In the case study, SWMM-EFDC, an integrated overland area and river model, was developed to model green-grey-blue coupled system. Rapid optimization was conducted by integrating SWMM-EFDC model, NSGA-III, and LSTM method. It can accelerate optimal process 224,000 times compared to traditional optimization. The results show that Green-grey-blue coupled optimization framework offer more cost-effective solutions which can save up to 38.29% cost.

Prof. Haifeng Jia

Dr. Jia has completed 95+ research projects in areas of sponge city and resilience city,  urban runoff control, water quality simulation modelling, urban river rehabilitation and water resources management. With an interdisciplinary academic background, he has concentrated on the research of urban water system, especially on the interactive mechanisms among hydrodynamics, water quality, ecology, urban runoff, and land. He has made major scholastic contributions in the areas of urban river restoration theory and technical system, coupling simulation of water-ecology-land-air system, and uncertainty analysis of complex water quality models. Dr. Jia has published 80+ English peer-reviewed journal papers, 100+ Chinese peer-reviewed journal papers, 70 international conference papers, 50 Chinese conference papers, and 17 books & journal special issues. He has received 39 different level academic and engineering Awards and Honors.

Dr. Jia has engaged in collaborative research extensively with international colleagues: he has served as a Visiting Professor in USA, UK, Germany and Netherlands. He is also very active in participating in international academic activities and international organizations. He has attended many international conferences; including those held by ASCE/EWRI, IWA, etc... Prof. Jia organized the 8th International Watershed Management Conference in 2011 in Beijing. In 2016, he organized 2016 International LID Conference in Beijing, which drew about 1,200 attendees from all over the world. In 2018, He organized 2018 International Sponge city conference in Xi'an city, China, which had more than 2000 attendants. He was the first scholar in China to be elected a Diplomate of Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) by the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE). He served as Member of IAHR/IWA Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, National Sponge city construction technical committee, Vice Director of Sponge city construction committee of China Urban Water Association, Director of Academic Board of Suzhou Sponge City Research Institute. He also was appointed by many municipal government as consultant expert for sponge city construction and water environment protection, include Shanghai, Nanping, Shantou, Foshan, Qingyang, Hohhot, etc.
