ABSTRACT

The diffraction limit is a fundamental barrier in optical science and engineering. It restricts the imaging resolution for both fundamental research and applications in biology, chemistry, and material science industry. Microspheres have been demonstrated as a powerful platform to challenge the diffraction limit. Microspheres can manipulate light in a novel way that conventional optical components cannot achieve. In this presentation, Dr. Chen summarizes his contribution to the fundamental physics, system development, and potential applications of this technology. The ~20 nm observation power was demonstrated for label-free samples, which forms the foundation of super-resolution optical imaging to observe nano-structures in water, oil, and ambient air.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Chen obtained both his Ph.D. (Wang Gungwu Medal and Prize) and bachelor's degrees (first class honor) from National University of Singapore, supervised by Prof. Hong Minghui, Fellow of Academy of Engineering Singapore. His research focuses are optical imaging and optical functional materials. He has 27 publications, including Springer Nature book chapter, Science Advances, Applied Physics Reviews, Advanced Optical Materials, et al (Citation 859, h-Index 12). He serves as the youth editor for Acta Physica Sinica, Chinese Physics Letters (CPL), Chinese Physics B (CPB), Physics (China), and also in the Singapore journal office for Opto-Electronics Advances and Light: Science & Application. Two of his patents were successfully commercialized, and he is the co-founder of the company. He is also a member of Optical Society of America (OSA), International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES).
