BiSheng Compiler Competition

12:00am - 11:55pm

Supporting the below United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:支持以下聯合國可持續發展目標:支持以下联合国可持续发展目标:

This competition designed to cultivate the next generation of compiler engineers and systems researchers, the competition reaches an important milestone this year: for the first time, we are opening participation beyond Mainland China to universities across the Asia-Pacific and Europe. As we begin building an international community of compiler talent, we are reaching out to leading institutions — and given HKUST's outstanding reputation in compiler and systems research, we would be honored to count your university among our overseas participants.

About the BiSheng Compiler

The BiSheng Compiler is a high-performance, highly reliable, and easily extensible compiler toolchain developed by Huawei. Built on the LLVM infrastructure, it supports C, C++, and Fortran, and incorporates a wide range of advanced optimization techniques. It is particularly well optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) scenarios and modern general-purpose processor architectures.

Competition at a Glance

  • Two tracks for different audiences:
  • Compiler System Implementation Track — for undergraduate students, with two backend platforms (ARM and RISC-V) to choose from.
  • Compiler System Challenge Track — open to both undergraduate and graduate students, focusing on innovation and real-world industrial scenarios. Problems are co-designed by universities and industry partners including Huawei and Loongson.
  • Two stages: online preliminary round, followed by the Grand Final.
  • Cloud-based development and evaluation environment provided free of charge by the organizing committee.
  • Technical training sessions offered throughout the registration and preliminary phases.

Key information

  • "Huawei BiSheng Cup" (top team across First Prize winners): RMB 50,000 (pre-tax), plus trophy.
  • Second Prize: RMB 10,000 (pre-tax) per team, plus certificate.
  • Third Prize, Merit Award, Innovation Award, Outstanding Advisor Award, and individual proficiency certificates are also offered.

Why Participate

Participation offers students a unique chance to:

  • Work on authentic compiler engineering problems beyond the standard curriculum.
  • Strengthen their understanding of LLVM internals, optimization passes, and performance tuning on modern architectures.
  • Network with industry experts and peers from top universities.
  • Enhance their academic profile and career prospects in systems software, HPC, and AI infrastructure.
