Balancing Innovation with Patient-Centred Care: A Primary Care Perspective

Primary care plays a critical role in ensuring that healthcare innovation remains grounded in the needs, priorities and experiences of patients. This seminar will examine how patient-centred approaches can be used to design, evaluate and implement new technologies in real-world clinical settings.
Drawing on research from the DEFINE programme, I will describe the development of a digital biomarker-guided asthma management intervention informed by behavioural science and stakeholder engagement, and present findings from a large pragmatic randomised controlled trial and mixed-methods process evaluation.
I will discuss what we learned from this work, and consider the implications for clinical practice, health policy and future opportunities to create diagnostic and monitoring platforms that support personalised care while remaining acceptable, practical and effective in everyday healthcare.
Prof. Kay WANG

Professor Kay Wang is a Clinical Professor in Primary Medical Care at the University of Southampton and a practising General Practitioner. She leads internationally recognised research on respiratory disease in primary care, with a particular focus on asthma, respiratory infections, and the development and evaluation of innovative diagnostic and monitoring technologies. She has secured and contributed to more than £22 million in competitive research funding and has led major NIHR-funded programmes of research, including the DEFINE programme, which developed and evaluated an online biomarker-guided asthma management intervention. Her research has informed NICE guidance and has been cited in the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) strategy report.
Professor Wang has extensive experience in medical education and research capacity development. She co-leads the Optimising Clinical Care theme of the Centre for Applied Respiratory Research, Innovation and Impact, supporting the development of future clinical academics and translation of research into practice and policy.
