APRU Global Health Webinar: Surmounting Ethical Challenges in Health and Aging

Aiming to explore pressing ethical challenges broadly related to global aging and health, the “Surmounting Ethical Challenges in Health and Aging” webinar is co-organized by three of the APRU Global Health Working Groups: Aging, Bioethics, and Nursing.
Bringing together experts from the Asia Pacific, the session will highlight the diverse cultural, social, and healthcare contexts that shape aging in the region. It will underscore the urgency of ethical dialogue and collaborative action as global populations age rapidly. The webinar will examine the importance of culturally sensitive, person-centered approaches to elder care and encourage a rethinking of current care models to better uphold dignity, justice, and compassion for older adults—especially within increasingly complex and resource-strained health systems.
Laurence Lloyd B. Parial will discuss ethics in the development of age-friendly environments that promote autonomy, social inclusion, and accessibility for seniors.
Chenyang Li will explore how Confucian values—such as filial piety and intergenerational responsibility—inform ethical caregiving practices in Asian societies.
Reena Rajasuriar will discuss the ethics of caring for older adults living with HIV, emphasizing the need to confront stigma and ensure equitable access to healthcare services.
Carole Estabrooks will speak on human rights, ageism and sex discrimination in long-term care.
Julian Savulescu will explore the ethics around life extension as the possibility of extending human lifespan becoming more attainable.
