- Harnessing a Market-Driven Approach to Sustainable ForestryForests play a crucial role in the global economy, contributing over USD 1.5 trillion annually to global GDP. They also provide essential ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, clean air, water cycle regulation, and support for biodiversity. However, 90% of deforestation and forest degradation is attributed to agricultural expansion driven by human consumption demands. The Forest Stewardship Council®(FSC®) promotes responsible sourcing to protect the world's forests in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. As global accords and trade regulations mandating sustainable supply chains emerge, prioritizing forest conservation and promoting sustainable forest economies is essential for fostering a resilient and thriving global ecosystem.
Dr. Michelle Wong serves as the Deputy Regional Director of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Asia-Pacific, bringing over two decades of expertise in environmental science and policy to the role. Her extensive efforts have spanned critical areas such as air quality, climate mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, urban walkability, and sustainable building practices.
Michelle’s unique blend of academic rigor and hands-on experience – gained from her work in universities, NGOs, and policy think tanks – has been pivotal in facilitating environmental education and evidence-based policymaking in Hong Kong.
Currently, Michelle is at the forefront of efforts to facilitate compliance with the EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR), a vital law in combating climate change and safeguarding biodiversity as well as driving sustainability and legality in the forest commodity sectors. She is also leading initiatives to enhance forest management by encouraging corporate efforts to create nature-positive impacts that align economic practices with environmental stewardship.
Outside of her professional scope, Michelle is an avid nature enthusiast and engages in various artistic endeavours, embodying a well-rounded approach to both life and leadership.
