Abstract

The Meaning of Machine Vision is making the machine see and understand the world. With the explosion of IoT and Industry 4.0, there is a great need on improving the productivity, quality control and cost with the automated production line. That posts a huge demand of automated system based on Machine Vision. The typical applications are mobile manufacture, automobile manufacture, assembling and packaging and so on.

Machine Vision system no only helps to efficiently improve the current factory automation Industry, also it makes a viable solution for the Smart City (ITS/IVS), including E-police, Check Point/ Road Prevention, etc. For example, ITS Smart Camera with DL Algorithm can effectively identify the Driver’s Face, Illegal Behavior Detection, Seat Belt Detection, Color and Speed of the car, Brand, Type & Other Vehicle Information and the License Plate for the Recorder & Traffic Flow Management system. In the IoT era, machine vision can also be found in the following applications, such as AR/VR/MR, ADAS, Smart Home, Smart Module, Code Reader, and Smart Drone, etc. As a result, Machine Vision and AI are changing our life and make it a better one.

To better understand the world, the MV system needs a clear vision. There are several parameters that leads the direction to design sensors for the MV. Those parameters include accurate and clear image, quick response, high sensitivity, high dynamic range and high SNR. 

At 2017, in order to meet the trend of AI and machine vision, SmartSens Technology launched a SmartGS™ series Global Shutter CMOS imaging sensor product line. It is the world’s first GS CIS based on TSMC BSI technology. In this talk, we will give you a detail view on the global shutter technology and how it will help to improve the efficiency of the recognition algorithm for the MV and AI. What is our current status on the product development? And how we teamed with TSMC on the development of the next generation of Smart Vision Imaging Platform (SVIP) using the latest Stack Technology. By integrating the DL algorithm and image processor on the same sensor chip, we can achieve a more efficient and robust solution for the future robotic system and medical applications.

 

Speaker's Biography

Dr. Richard Xu obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at HKUST at 2004. His researches was mainly focused on the advanced CMOS image sensor design. His major achievement was creating sensors operating with the most efficient power and lowest voltage. His study were published and presented in major scientific journals and conferences including TED, EDL, JSSC and ISSCC, and several U.S. patents were granted. 

After graduated, Dr. Xu went to U.S. and worked at several top CMOS image sensor design companies. He successfully initiated design projects and created more than 20 CMOS image sensor products, assisting these companies in developing high-end imaging solutions and leading the field. In particular, his talents and contributions were highly valued by U.S Government. USCIS (United Stated Citizenship and Immigration Services) recognized his extraordinary ability in sensor technologies and granted a permanent residency accordingly. Also, his efforts were awarded by U.S. Electronic Design Magazine with “Best Electronic Design” award in 2011. 

At 2011, Dr. Xu started his own company - SmartSens Technology in Shanghai, China and quickly grow into a multi-national company and major player in the field. His company’s product portfolio is mainly focus on high performance sensors for security and automotive application, artificial intelligent sensor solutions and the machine vision, etc. His company hits the milestone of shipment of 100M units by 2017 and becoming one of the fastest growing image sensor companies in the world. Dr. Xu was selected the 13th 1000 Recruitment Program for Innovative Talents (国家千人计划)at 2016. He serves as a committee member and visiting scholar of many technical organizations and universities. He is the inventor of 35 US patents and 12 China patents. Dr. Xu devotes himself to the development of China’s semiconductor industry and making people a better life through sensor technologies.
