This summer, the Shaw Auditorium Unit invites you to embark on a creative journey with our "Made of Hong Kong " workshop series. Get ready to peel back the layers of this vibrant city through engaging hands-on crafting activities that celebrate the beauty of everyday life.

Through the captivating sounds of Hong Kong and the delightful tastes of its diverse food culture, each workshop invites participants to discover the character of the city. You will have the chance to unleash your creativity and connect with the cultural stories that shape Hong Kong.

The workshops will be open to undergraduate students from overseas who are joining the HKUST Summer School, UG and PG Students, as well as members of the HKUST community.

 

Workshop Details:

1. Kalimba Making Workshop by Mindful Living

Date: July 27, 2026 (Mon)
Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Venue: Room 209, 2/F, Shaw Auditorium
Workshop Fee: $200
Introduction:  Discover the soothing melodies of the Kalimba, a traditional African instrument, and bring it to life with a Hong Kong twist. In this hands-on workshop led by Tin Nam from Mindful Living, you will assemble, tune, craft, decorate, and play your very own thumb piano. Your Kalimba will feature designs inspired by iconic Hong Kong local scenes. You will learn to play "The Blue Danube," the familiar tune heard from ice-cream truck in Hong Kong.

2. Intaglio Printmaking (Drypoint) Workshop by Hong Kong Open Printshop

Date: July 28, 2026 (Tue)
Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Venue: Room 209, 2/F, Shaw Auditorium
Workshop Fee: $200
Introduction: Explore the expressive art of Intaglio printmaking with the Hong Kong Open Printshop (HKOP). This beginner-friendly workshop introduces the drypoint technique, where you'll carve directly onto a plate using a pointed tool to create unique, soft, and feathered lines. Guided by instructor, you will learn the fundamentals of plate preparation, inking, and printing, and craft your own A6 print capturing your personal "Impression of Hong Kong”.

3. 3D Paper Art Workshop by Vika Cheng

Date: July 29, 2026 (Wed)
Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Venue: Room 209, 2/F, Shaw Auditorium
Workshop Fee: $200
Introduction: Dive into the captivating world of 3D paper art with Vika Cheng, founder of Vika Stop Motion Studio. This workshop focuses on transforming flat paper into stunning three-dimensional creations. You will master paper collage and composition techniques to build a delightful representation of a traditional Hong Kong tea set, complete with HK-style French toast and milk tea.

4. Cyanotype Workshop by Blackcred

Date: July 30, 2026 (Thu)
Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Venue: Room 209, 2/F, Shaw Auditorium
Workshop Fee: $200
Introduction: Experience the magic of Cyanotype, an ancient photographic process that yields beautiful blue-tinted images. Guided by Blackcred, a local brand specializing in modern applications of this traditional technique, you will learn the entire process from mixing solutions to developing your artwork. Using materials featuring iconic Hong Kong elements, you will create your own unique cyanotype piece, capturing the spirit of the city and documenting its unique charm.

How to Register:

  1. Online Application:
    Interested participants are required to submit their application online.
  2. Confirmation:
    Eligible applicants will receive a confirmation email along with the payment method. If the workshop is full, your application will be placed on the waiting list, and you will receive a waiting list notification email.
  3. Payment and Release of Unpaid Spots:
    Please complete the payment by the specified deadline in the email. Your spot will only be confirmed upon successful payment. Unpaid applications after the deadline will be considered withdrawn and their spots will be released.

  • Please present your Student Card / Staff Card / Alumni e-card / Resident Card for identity verification when attending the workshop.
  • The Shaw Auditorium Unit reserves the right in its sole discretion to make changes to the event program without prior notice.
