This summer, the Shaw Auditorium Unit invites you to embark on a creative journey with our "Made of Hong Kong" workshop series. Get ready to explore the charm of this vibrant city through engaging hands-on crafting activities that celebrate the beauty of everyday life.

Through Hong Kong’s captivating landscapes and rich cultural diversity, each workshop invites participants to discover the unique character of the city. You will have the chance to unleash your creativity while connecting with the cultural elements that shape Hong Kong.

The workshops are open to all students, staff as well as members of the HKUST community.
 

Workshop Details:

1. Kalimba Making Workshop by Mindful Living

Workshop Fee: $200 (Non-refundable)

Workshop Introduction: 
Discover the soothing melodies of the Kalimba, a traditional African instrument, and bring it to life with a Hong Kong twist. In this hands-on workshop led by Tin Nam from Mindful Living, you will assemble, tune, craft, decorate, and play your very own Kalimba, a thumb piano. Your Kalimba will feature designs inspired by iconic Hong Kong local scenes, making it a truly personal keepsake. Along the way, you will learn to play "The Blue Danube," the familiar tune often heard from ice-cream truck in Hong Kong.

*Recommended for ages 9 and above.
 
Participants under 9 must be accompanied by an adult, and will share a single spot.
  

Introduction of Tin Nam (Mindful Living): 
Tin Nam is an Expressive Art Therapist and workshop instructor from Mindful Living. She holds a Master’s degree in Expressive Art Therapy with a minor in Psychology from the European Graduate School. Tin Nam is a certified Alcohol Ink Art Teacher with Felix & Rena Art Academy (Taiwan) and Atelier Tua Plus One (Japan), a Zentangle Teacher (USA), a Nagomi Pastel Art Teacher (Japan), and a Himalayas Singing Bowl Teacher. She is also a certified Six Bricks Level 2 Facilitator, integrating mindfulness, creativity, and expressive practices into her teaching and therapeutic work.

2. Intaglio Printmaking (Drypoint) Workshop by Hong Kong Open Printshop

Workshop Fee: $200 (Non-refundable)

Workshop Introduction: 
Explore the expressive art of Intaglio printmaking with the Hong Kong Open Printshop (HKOP). This beginner-friendly workshop introduces the drypoint technique, where you will carve directly onto a plate using a pointed tool to create unique, soft, and feathered lines. Guided by 
an instructor, you will learn the fundamentals of plate preparation, inking, and printing, and craft your own A6 print capturing your personal "Impression of Hong Kong”.

*Recommended for ages 16 and above.
Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and will share a single spot.

 

Introduction of Hong Kong Open Printshop
Founded in 2000, Hong Kong Open Printshop (HKOP) is the first non-profit open printshop run by artists in Hong Kong. In 2012, HKOP was registered as a charitable organisation governed by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee and operated by a professional team. HKOP is a recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Eminent Arts Group Scheme (2024–2029).


HKOP is dedicated to promoting graphic art, encouraging international cultural exchange, enhancing the quality and professional standard in artistic expression, and giving back to the community by preserving local print art culture.

3. 3D Paper Art Workshop by Vika Cheng

Workshop Introduction: 
Dive into the captivating world of 3D paper art with Vika Cheng, founder of Vika Stop Motion Studio. This workshop focuses on transforming flat paper into stunning three-dimensional creations. You will master paper collage and composition techniques to build a delightful representation of a traditional Hong Kong tea set, complete with
Hong Kong-style French toast and milk tea.

*Recommended for ages 10 and above.
Participants under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, and will share a single spot.

 

Introduction of Vika Cheng (Vika Stop Motion Studio)
Vika Cheng, Founder of Vika Stop Motion Studio, holds a Master in Fine Art from a prestigious institution in London. After completing her academic journey, she began exploring the medium of paper collage, quickly developing a passion that would define her artistic career. Her innovative approach to paper collage has garnered recognition in the commercial art world, with her works featured in various high-profile projects.


Vika’s artistry shines in commercial stop-motion videos, where she has collaborated with renowned companies such as Hong Kong Disneyland, New Balance, Hong Kong Tramway, Pricerite, Watsons, UOB, and CLP.

4. Cyanotype Workshop by Blackcred

Workshop Introduction: 
Experience the magic of cyanotype, an ancient photographic process that yields beautiful blue-tinted images. Guided by Blackcred, a local brand specializing in modern applications of this traditional technique, you will learn the entire process from mixing solutions to developing your artwork. Using materials featuring iconic Hong Kong elements, you will create your own unique cyanotype piece, capturing the spirit of the city and documenting its
distinctive charm.

*Recommended for ages 10 and above.

Participants under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, and will share a single spot.

 

Introduction of Blackcred
Blackcred is a studio dedicated to classical photographic processes. Constantly committed to the art of cyanotype, the studio tells the stories and emotions behind each image through its creations, while striving to promote classical photography to ensure the preservation and transmission of this timeless craft.

    Interested participants are required to 
    submit their registration online.
     
  2. Confirmation:
    Eligible applicants will receive a confirmation email along with the payment method. If the workshop is full, your application will be placed on the waiting list, and you will receive a waiting list notification email.
     
  3. Payment and Release of Unpaid Spots:

    Please complete the payment by the deadline specified in the email. Your spot will only be confirmed upon successful payment. Applications not paid by the deadline will be treated as withdrawn, and the spots will be released.

  • Please present your Student Card / Staff Card / Alumni e-card / Resident Card / Family Card for identity verification when attending the workshop.
  • All workshop fees are non-refundable. The listed fees are subsidized by the Shaw Auditorium Unit.
