This seminar outlines an enthusiastic vision for contributing to the pioneering HKUST School of Medicine, structured across three core segments. The first part traces a professional journey evolving from a neurosurgeon into a dedicated biomedical educator and translational neuroscientist. The second part highlights major research discoveries using emerging technologies and preclinical models to define Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia. The final part outlines opportunities to leverage the speaker’s interdisciplinary expertise in medical teaching, mentoring, and translational neuroscience research within the new school of medicine. The talk expresses sincere commitment to this vibrant academic community, sharing deep excitement to support a transformative, technology-driven model of medical education that helps cultivate the next generation of global physician-scientists.

Professor Shaohua Yang is a physician-scientist whose career embodies a deliberate integration of clinical insight and basic science. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine from Beijing Medical University and completed neurosurgery residency at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, followed by fellowship at the University of Florida. He subsequently earned his PhD in Pharmacology and Neuroscience before transitioning into full-time academic biomedical science, building over two decades of robust, NIH-funded translational research at University of North Texas Health Science Center with over 150 highly cited peer-reviewed articles. As a biomedical educator and translational neuroscientist, his research leverages emerging technologies to define the pathways underlying cerebral vascular disease and cognitive decline. He brings this rich interdisciplinary background to the pioneering HKUST School of Medicine, where he looks forward to collaborating with a vibrant academic community and helping champion an innovative, technology-driven model of medical education for cultivating the future physician-scientists.
