Talk and Demonstration: Cantonese Opera Costumes, Props and Masks

The talk will focus on the variety and symbolism of costumes, masks and make-up of Cantonese opera, which correspond to the various roles of characters in this traditional art form of southern China. Common props used in classical Cantonese opera scenes will also be introduced.

Speakers / Performers:
Prof. Chan Sau Yan

As one of the most outstanding scholars in Cantonese opera in Hong Kong, Prof Chan has researched and published incessantly in the field for the past 30 years. 

 

He was a faculty member in the Department of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1987 to 2007. He taught courses in Chinese opera, Cantonese opera, fieldwork methodology and Hong Kong music. Currently, he is an adjunct professor in cultural management at CUHK. His works include The Creative Legend of Tong Dik-seng  (2016), The Ups and Downs of Ritualistic Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong (co-authored with Cham Lai Suk-ching, 2018), The Purple Hairpin: An Annotated Libretto for Readers (co-authored with Cheung Kwan-hin and Ho Koon-wan, 2021) and The Flower Princess: An Annotated Libretto for Readers (co-authored with Cheung Kwan-hin, 2nd edition 2022).
