Abstract

Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) has evolved from a specialized in vitro protein expression method into a programmable platform for synthetic biology. By removing the constraints of living cells while preserving transcription, translation, energy regeneration, and metabolism, cell-free systems provide an open environment for engineering biological functions. This seminar introduces the biochemical principles of CFPS, summarizes advances in the last decade, and discusses applications in rapid prototyping, diagnostics, distributed biomanufacturing, metabolic engineering, and synthetic cell construction.
