Since 1808, metallothermic reduction reaction has been widely used in the large-scale industrial production of metals and alloys. However, the preparation and application of inorganic materials based on metallothermic reduction reaction remained unexplored.  Based on the instantaneous high temperature, strong reducibility and special phase separation of metallothermic reduction reaction, Zhenyu has synthesized inorganic materials such as lithium sulfide, porous carbon, artificial graphite and silicon-carbon composites since 2012. Then, Zhenyu verified the excellent performance of above materials in secondary batteries, and cooperated with relevant leading enterprises to promote the small-scale and pilot tests.  To sum up, Zhenyu has expanded the field of metallothermic reduction reaction from metals and alloys to inorganic materials, which greatly enriches the content of metallothermic reduction reaction.

Speakers / Performers:
Prof Zhenyu XING
South China Normal University

Zhenyu Xing obtained his BSc in chemistry from Jilin University in 2012. He earned his PhD in chemistry from Oregon State University in 2016 under the supervision of Prof. Xiulei Ji and Jun Lu. Then, he did his postdoctoral research with Prof. Zhongwei Chen at the University of Waterloo between 2017 and 2018. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry at South China Normal University. His research focuses on the synthesis and application of materials by the metallorthermic reduction reaction. At present, Zhenyu Xing has applied for 10 patents with 7 patents licensed and 5 patents assigned. In addition, Zhenyu Xing has published 49 SCI papers with a total citation over 5300 and an H-index of 30. Among these papers, 29 SCI papers such as Nature Energy, Chem, Matter, Advanced Material, ACS Energy Letter are published where the applicant act as first author/corresponding author.
