Public Research Seminar by Sustainable Energy and Environment Thrust, HKUST(GZ) - Research on the Application of Low-cost and High-efficiency UAV Suitable for Low Altitude Flight

9:30am - 10:30am
E4-101, Guangzhou campus (Zoom ID: 917 6697 5159, Password: 241119)

My seminar generally contains four parts.

The first part is Personal Information, where I will briefly introduce my educational background and work experience.

The second part is the Research Achievements. Firstly, I will summarize the research work conducted in the last ten years. Then, based on our in-house codes F2M (Solver of Flight-dynamics for Flexible Multi-body), I will show some typical simulation examples by F2M. Subsequently, published academic books will be shown, including translated book on flapping wing aerodynamics and book on the Complete Equation for Unmanned Helicopters. Finally, based on my published journal papers, some interesting topics I carried out in recent years will be present, including tandem configuration, vertical tail buffet and buffeting suppression for high sweep delta wing at high angles of attack, bio-inspired airfoils and configurations.

The third part is about Aircraft Design by our team. I will introduce the design and flight tests for four typical configurations, including high lift configuration, Blended-Wing-Body configuration, configurations with inflatable wing structure, and gun-launched loitering munition with foldable tandem wing.

The fourth part is about Low Altitude Aircraft, combined with a previously failed test flight of a tilted ducted aircraft by our team and the current era of vigorously developing low altitude economy, exploring aircraft types suitable for future low altitude economy, analyzing and discussing the prospects and challenges of current eVTOL development.

講者/ 表演者:
Qing Zhang
China North Industries Corporation–Xi’an Center

Dr. Qing Zhang is currently the chief aircraft designer at NORINCO Group in Xi'an, he works on exploring novel flight principles (novel airfoil, novel configuration, novel flow control methods) and developing new aircraft (bio-inspired aircraft, new concept aircraft, eVTOL).

Born in 1987 in Xiangyang, a beautiful city in central China, Zhang's early fascination with fluid mechanics, evident in his summer holidays spent swimming in the river near his village, laid the foundation for his academic journey. In 2007, he embarked on a path of learning at Northwestern Polytechnical University. Over the course of 11 years, he consecutively earned a bachelor's degree in Flight Vehicle Design and Engineering in 2011, a master's degree in Fluid Mechanics in 2014, and a doctorate degree in Aerodynamics in 2018.

As a dedicated aircraft designer, Zhang has always had a childhood dream of soaring in the blue sky. This aspiration led him to Northwestern Polytechnical University, renowned as China's leading institution for aircraft design and engineering. His extensive studies and research experience have given him a profound understanding of the overall design of flapping wings, fixed wings, and rotary wings.

Not only is Zhang an accomplished engineer, but he is also a passionate educator. After graduation, he has served at universities and aircraft research institutes, engaging in teaching and research on aircraft design. During this time, he has designed several new concept aircraft and played a crucial role in helping students establish the connection between learning and practice.

In his spare time, Zhang is an interesting knowledge sharer. He operates a free WeChat official account called "Aviation Dao." Every day, he collects and reports the latest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) knowledge. The account has amassed millions of views, with the most popular article on loitering munitions with delta wing configuration boasting more than 70,000 views. With his unwavering dedication and passion for aviation, Dr. Qing Zhang continues to make significant contributions to the field of aircraft design and education.
