Abstract

Inductance saliency is a rotor position self-sensing method that complements traditional self-sensing methods and is believed to be able to deliver robust closed-loop control under different conditions in low-speed to standstill situations. In this paper, a novel rotor position self-sensing method that rivals other inductance saliency tracking position sensing method is proposed. The method tracks inductance saliency through estimating the impedance of the stator winding. Rotor angle information is then produced out of a phase-locked-loop. Detailed operation theory and detection performance on different motors are discussed. Practical issues and non-linearities that will arise and possible compensation method are also addressed for realization. The capability of the method on overcoming specific inverter practical issues that challenges conventional sensorless control is also demonstrated. Finally, a brushless DC motor model is constructed and simulated. Results are cross-checked with the experiment data and tracking results from the self-sensing controller under different conditions are studied.
