Abstract

Silicon photonics, as one of the most important emerging technologies, has progressed and developed steadily since late 1980s. Especially in the past decade, we have been witnessing rapid growth in research and development activities along with product development efforts exploiting silicon photonics technology for the application areas such as optical communication, optical interconnection, optical biosensors, quantum communication, etc.  In this talk, I will start with the introduction of silicon photonics, followed with the silicon photonics fundamentals, including most of the fundamental silicon photonics building blocks. Then, some of my representative work, including optical switches, traveling-wave photodetector arrays, and hybrid devices through wafer-level die-transfer bonding technology will be highlighted. Finally, a brief summary and outlook along with possible future research directions will be discussed.

Speaker's Biography

Xianshu Luo received the B. E. degree of Microelectronics from Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin, China, in 2003, the M.S. degree of Microelectronics and Solid State Physics from Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, in 2006, and the Ph. D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, in 2010.  His Ph. D. work covered a broad range subject to silicon micro/nanophotonics for networks-on-chip applications, including microresonator-based optical filter, modulators, switches, and optical delay lines, from design, fabrication and optical/electrical characterization. He is currently a Scientist with the Institute of Microelectronics, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, where he is engaged in research on silicon photonic integrated circuits (Si-PIC), heterogeneous integration of optoelectronic integrated circuits (H-OEIC) for applications such as optical telecommunication, on-chip optical interconnection, microwave photonics, optical bio/chemical sensing, etc. He has authored/co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal and conferences papers, 4 book chapters, and holds more than 20 US/Singapore/Chinese patents.

Dr. Luo was a recipient of NanoProgram Fellowship from HKUST during his Ph. D. thesis period. Dr. Luo received the Best Presentation Award in the 9th IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) Hong Kong Chapter Postgraduate Conference in 2008, and IEEE Photonics Society Best Student Paper Award in the 14th OptoElectronics and Communications Conference in 2009.
