Born in Beijing, he earned his D.Eng at Yale University in 1961. He started Journal of Composite Materials as its Editor-in-Chief in 1967; discovered Halpin-Tsai equation in 1970, and Tsai-Wu failure criterion in 1975; elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1995; discovered Tsai’s modulus in 2015 as the single parameter for laminate stiffness; new lamination in double-double in 2020 for weight reduction; ranking of materials and laminates in 2021 that can scale design and testing. Recently, he is the winner of the Guggenheim Medal for 2025 of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA), and of the Spirit of St. Louis Medal for 2025 of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) for their Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials (SSDM) Conference.

讲者/ 表演者:
Professor Stephen TSAI
Research Professor Emeritus at Stanford University

Prof. Stephen Tsai will reflect on his long career in materials science and engineering, life and studies in China and the United States, and trends in science and engineering.  He will touch on the significance of his work in failure modes and stiffness in composite materials, as well as his recent work to develop and publicize a new composites production technique, “Double-double” lamination, which compares favorably with “Quad” lamination and described by colleagues at NASA as “truly revolutionary.”
