Thoracic surgery — ranging from lung cancer resection to lung transplantation — sits at the intersection of clinical care and research, and is a foundational part of the medical curriculum. Prof. Michael Hsin’s research illustrates how interdisciplinary research between thoracic surgery, engineering and biomedical sciences can improve patient care:
Computational high-throughput autofluorescence microscopy by pattern illumination: an AI-enabled technology that provides rapid and accurate on-the-spot label free histological imaging. It is under evaluation for intraoperative decision-making in lung cancer surgery.
Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion: a platform that perfuses marginal donor lungs and enables additional objective evaluation after organ procurement. It has been shown to increase the donor pool.
Metabolomics in lung transplantation: a platform for uncovering the biochemical pathways of graft dysfunction and identifying candidate biomarkers of graft injury, offering a path toward improved transplant outcomes.

Clinical Associate Professor Department of Surgery, The University of Hong Kong Prof. Michael HSIN graduated from Cambridge University, where he received his MBBChir and Doctor of Medicine. He was trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery in London, UK. He had further training in lung transplantation at the University of Toronto/ Toronto General Hospital, Canada. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, Honorary Consultant of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Queen Mary Hospital, and Chairman of the Thoracic Surgery Division, The Hong Kong University Shenzhen Hospital. His clinical and research interests include surgery for lung cancer, metabolomics in lung transplantation and ex vivo lung perfusion.
