Abstract

Liquid crystal lens array for 3D capturing images in particular the acquisition of medical images by an endoscope will be presented. To demonstrate the potential of this approach and its suitability for medical imaging, an array of LC lens in a hexagonal arrangement is investigated. The primary goal is to determine a convex-ring electrode not as a lens itself but as a surrounding electrode which makes better transparency and tunability for LC lens for a 2D/3D switchable endoscope. The focus tunability of LC lenses when switched into 2D or 3D mode is another important factor. The proposed multifunctional LC lens (MFLC-lens), is able to switch to and from 2D and 3D modes, and can further change the focus in both modes. The system is investigated by using dual-layer electrodes and a semi-layer film.  Experimental procedures, apparatus, and results are discussed.
