Lovers' Complaint: a Musical Tour Through Central Asia, Caucasus and the Middle East by Nur Collective
The fervent Lover has a burning desire to be in union with the Beloved, who always remain elusive, out of grasp. The Lover sojourns the world, suffers all sorts of humiliation, gives up all earthly wants, in hope for just one glance from the perfect Beloved. Such is the fervent love depicted in many songs from Central Asia, Caucasus and the Middle East, reflecting the influence of Sufism, a mystical tradition within Islam.
In this concert, The Nur Collective will bring you the yearnings and ecstasy of this tradition through a selection of songs and pieces from across the region, from classical music of the Uyghurs, contemporary arrangements of Caucasian folk music, to the songs of the beloved Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum, experienced through an array of authentic lutes, flutes and drums from the area.

Kurdish folk song composed by the Armenian singer Aram Tigran (1934-2009), set to a poem by the revered Kurdish poet Fêqiye Teyran(1561-1644). - Girdim yarın bağçasına
Azeri folk song - Aziza
Contemporary Arabic classical instrumental written by the Egyptian composer Mohamed Abdelwahab (b. 1962) - Beredak
Contemporary Arabic song composed by Egyptian composer Zakariyya Ahmad (1896-1961) set to a poem by the Egyptian poet Bayram al-Tunsi (1893-1961), made famous in the film “Sallama” (1944) by the Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum (1898-1975). - Soqiynomai Savti Kalon
Classical Uzbek song from the canonic repertoire shashmaqom, set to a poem by the poet (and founder of the Mughal Empire) Babur (1526-1530).

Contemporary composition by the Turkish composer Omer Faruk Tekbilek (b. 1951) based on the melody of the Azeri folk song “Girdim yarın bağçasına”. - Adolat tanovari
One of the many variants of the popular Uzbek folk dance “Tanovar”. - Samai Hijazkar Kurd
Classical Ottoman composition by the Armenian composer Tatyos Efendi (1858-1913) - Jula & Jula merghuli from Muqam Chabbiyat
A classical dance-like song and instrumental postlude from the canonic repertoire muqam
ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTS
- Bağlama
A seven-stringed lute popular in Turkey, the Balkans and among the Kurdish population. - Darbuka
A goblet drum popular in the Middle East which is placed on the leg when played. - Doira
The Central Asian round frame drum with metal jingles in its interior. - Oud
The quintessential Arabic lute which is widely used in the Arabic world, and also popular in the Balkans, in Iran, Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia. - Uzbek dutar
A two-stringed lute played by strumming fingers over its silk strings. There are many other varieties of dutar in Central Asia and Iran. - Uyghur tembur
A five-stringed lute that is a distant cousin to the Indian sitar, and especially popular in Ili Valley in today’s northern Xinjiang. - Violin
The western violin has been widely adapted as an alternative, or sometimes even a replacement, to traditional spike-fiddles such as the ghijak in Central Asia or the rabab in the Arab world.

Founded in 2018, The Nur Collective is a group of musicians and cultural workers with a shared pas-sion for the musical traditions and cultures across Eurasia and North Africa. It aims to bring this ex-quisite cultural landscape to a wider public in Hong Kong. The Collective performs on traditional in-struments of the region, having studied with local tradition bearers. Its performances takes audience on a journey through various folk, classical and devotional music of the region.
The Collective has been invited to perform by the LCSD, the HK Maritime Museum and the UNESCO Hong Kong Association Global Peace Centre and has performed in venues such as the Academic Community Hall and the HK Space Museum. It has also given presentations for various local universities and associations.

- A temperature check is arranged at entrances. The audience with fever symptoms will be denied entry and should seek immediate medical advice.
觀眾進入場地前須接受體溫檢測，若有發燒症狀，將不得進場，並建議盡快求醫。 - Masks must be worn at all times in the venue.
場地內必須佩戴自備的口罩。 - Special seating arrangements and capacity control have been implemented. Please follow the seating instruction of the CFA staff.
為配合表演場地使用人數上限及保持社交距離，觀眾席現正實施特別座位安排。請觀眾遵從藝術中心職員指示入座。 - Hand sanitizers are provided in the venue.
