In this seminar, Prof. Yue will review the latest advancements in optical and mm-wave integrated circuit (IC) design by the Optical Wireless Lab at HKUST. The discussion will then transition to the commercial application of these research achievements through High5 Semiconductor (HK), which is a startup spin-off from HKUST. High5 is developing high-end eco-semiconductor to meet the future communication market's demand in data centers and 6G networks, backed by the venture funding from HK Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) under the RAISe+ Award. The seminar will conclude by identifying potential opportunities for innovation at the intersection of academia and industry.

Prof. Patrick YUE
Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering

Professor Yue is the first Associate Provost for Knowledge Transfer at HKUST. He is a Fellow of IEEE and Optica. He received his B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. He has co-founded several startups in Silicon Valley and Hong Kong, including Atheros, Jetcomm, LiPHY, and High5 Semi, with the aim of translating research outcomes into commercialized technologies. With over 20 years of teaching experience, he has taught and conducted research in integrated circuit (IC) design at Carnegie Mellon University (2003–2006), the University of California, Santa Barbara (2006–2011), Tsinghua University (2015–2016), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2010–present), and Stanford University (1998 & 2025). He has supervised more than 30 Ph.D. and over 10 M.S. students. He has received several awards, including the IEEE Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits Test of Time Award (2024), the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) Best Student Paper Award (2003), the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Outstanding Young Author Award (2017), and the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Youth Award by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (2016).

His current research interests span multiple fields, including integrated circuit design for optical, wireline, and millimeter-wave wireless communications, three-dimensional computer vision models, and smart grid management systems.
