Abstract

Understanding dynamic processes at electrode-electrolyte interfaces is essential for advancing electrochemical energy storage technologies. Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D), particularly when combined with electrochemical measurements (EQCM-D), provides a powerful in situ technique for simultaneously monitoring interfacial mass changes and the viscoelastic properties of electrode materials.

This presentation introduces the fundamental principles of QCM-D and highlights its applications in electrochemical research through representative studies published in leading scientific journals.

Key topics include the formation and evolution of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layers, ion intercalation and deintercalation, electrode-binder interactions, and charge storage mechanisms in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and aqueous zinc batteries. Additional examples illustrate how EQCM-D helps investigate ion transport in MXene electrodes and doping mechanisms in redox-active organic polymers.

By combining real-time mass measurements with dissipation monitoring, EQCM-D offers insights into interfacial processes that are difficult to obtain using conventional electrochemical techniques alone. The presentation demonstrates how this approach can contribute to a deeper understanding of electrode behavior, electrolyte interactions, and interfacial stability, ultimately supporting the development of next-generation energy storage materials and devices.
