GSCI Friday Seminar: Safe System Approach - The Future of Road Safety in Hong Kong

01:00pm - 02:00pm
SCIENCE HOME (opposite to LT-B)/ ZOOM

Speaker: Ir Julian KWONG, MPhil CEng FICE MHKIE/ Director, CHAUSSEES Limited

Despite substantial improvement over time, road safety problems remain a major hindrance for Hong Kong to become a truly modern city.

Whereas the Safe System Approach (SSA), or Vision Zero, has become the mainstream policy in many places, the concept is hardly known in Hong Kong. According to SSA, it is unacceptable that road-users are killed or seriously injured. Accordingly, the road transport system should be “forgiving” and “self-explaining” to be intrinsically safe.

In this presentation, Julian will highlight the inadequacies of current approaches and explain the urgency to incorporate SSA into Hong Kong’s future traffic and transport policy.
