More Information

Climate catastrophe is a threat to our daily livelihood, rising sea level, species extinction, bushfire, famine and drought. Our need for food is one of the biggest challenges to the planet. Scientists predict that the world population will be increased to 9 billion in 2050. To support that population, crop production would need to double. However, a large amount of crops is fed to animals, which is an inefficient way to produce calories. For example, 100 calories from grain could be consumed directly by humans instead of by cattle to provide just 3 calories from beef.  In addition, the efficiency of livestock land use is extremely low. According to Our World in Data, it takes almost 100 times more land to produce a gram of protein from beef than from peas or tofu . Furthermore, the animal agricultural industry accounts for 14.5% of greenhouse gases emissions - more than from cars, trains, planes, and trucks combined.
