About the Talk

In this talk, Michael will discuss what he thinks makes Stanford and Silicon Valley special in technology innovation, and what it is like being involved in and witnessing the growth and hurdles of an early-stage startup.

Michael will also share his experience as a computer science PhD student at Stanford University and as an early member of the engineering team at Apstra, a Silicon Valley technology startup.  Apstra was founded to enhance computing and networking infrastructure management and improvement.

As a newcomer in the industry, Michael cannot help but get excited about the rapid and relentless advances in computing technology. The field is relatively young, but it has already fundamentally changed our lives, while showing no signs of slowing down.

Speaker

Michael is an alumnus of HKUST and Stanford University.  He obtained his undergraduate Computer Engineering degree and an MPhil at HKUST, and his PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University.

Since November 2014 Michael has been a software engineer lead at Apstra, a company co-founded by veterans of the computer networking industry, including his PhD advisor Prof. David Cheriton. At Apstra, Michael wears multiple hats. His work encompasses designing and implementing various back-end components of the Apstra Operating System (AOS), managing a team of software engineers, and contributing to product definition and tech support.
