Public Research Seminar by Sustainable Energy and Environment Thrust, HKUST(GZ) - Modern Electric Vehicles – From Research to Education & Modern Electric Machines for Electric Vehicle Driving System
Modern Electric Vehicles – From Research to Education
Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the most important technological innovations that can save the environment. Over the years, there have been active EV research, leading to commercialization and popularization of EVs in recent years. Nevertheless, EV education is lagging behind the development of EVs. In this lecture, an overview of EVs will first be given. On the one hand, the latest EV research activities will be discussed and relevant directions will be identified. On the other hand, the emerging EV education including undergraduate and postgraduate levels will be presented.
Modern Electric Machines for Electric Vehicle Driving System
Electric machines play a pivotal role in the driving systems of electric vehicles (EVs). Various types of electric machines have been researched and implemented for EV applications. In addition to conventional electric machines, emerging stator permanent magnet (PM) electric machines with enhanced performance have been proposed in recent years, offering improved heat dissipation efficiency and simplified, robust rotor structures. Among the different stator PM machine variants, flux-switching PM (FSPM) machines have gained significant attention due to their superior torque, power density, and reduced torque ripple. In this lecture, novel High-order-harmonic stator FSPM machines are introduced to enhance torque and fault tolerance capabilities for EV driving systems.
