We are excited to have Dr. Min YANG, Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Acoustic Metamaterials Group Ltd, to share the topic "Optimal Metamaterial Absorber: From Causality to Commercialization".
All HKUST staff and students are welcome to join.
Details are as follows.
Date: 28 March 2025 (Friday)
Time: Starts At 15:15
Venue: Chen Kuan Cheng Forum (Lecture Theatre H), HKUST
Host: Prof. Junwei LIU, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, HKUST
Seminar Overview:
Optimal Metamaterial Absorber: From Causality to Commercialization - Acoustic metamaterial represents the synergism between wave physics and designed geometric structures, aimed at novel acoustic properties. For the important functionality of acoustic absorption, metamaterials face the challenges posed by a mature, existing group of absorbing materials that has proven their effectiveness. Can the metamaterials do better? If so, at what price? This article aims to answer these important questions. In particular, it is shown that the critical advantage offered by metamaterial absorbers lies in the tunability of the absorption spectrum to fit the needs of the client, in conjunction with a minimum absorber thickness set by the causal constraint. By overcoming the obstacles set by the mass production cost, acoustic metamaterial absorbers have now entered the commercialization stage. We give a few examples of the commercialized applications together with their underlying working principles, and conclude with some observations.
About the speaker:
Dr. Min YANG is a highly accomplished physicist with a strong track record of innovation in acoustic metamaterials. A graduate of HKUST, Dr. Yang has made significant contributions to the field, from pioneering fundamental research to leading the commercialization of metamaterials technology as Chief Scientific Officer at Acoustic Metamaterials Group Ltd. His work has not only advanced the understanding of acoustic phenomena but also paved the way for practical applications with real-world impact.
