In the past decade, with the development of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, communications and networking, many important physical infrastructures such as the power grid, the transportation systems, the logistics networks, the residential houses have been equipped with cyber components and operate in an “intelligent” and/or “smart” fashion to offer human unprecedented ways of life. While machine intelligence has certainly revolutionized our modern life, the heavy reliance on machines could result in disasters when machines fail (e.g., the Boeing 737 Max accidents). However, the reliability and efficiency of the various “intelligent” and/or “smart” systems can be greatly improved and enhanced via the collaboration of multiple intelligent entities, and become much more resilient to the failure of one or more members in the group. In this talk, we will discuss the development of IoT for cyber physical systems with emphasis on the smart grid and intelligent transportation, with examples to address the following issues: 1) How to understand and interpret the physical world? 2) How to interact with the physical world? and 3) How to cope with attacks and failures?

Speakers / Performers:
Dr. Dongliang Duan
University of Wyoming

Dongliang Duan received the B.S. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China in 2006, the M.S. degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree from the Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO in 2012, all in electrical engineering. Since graduation, he joined the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wyoming and is now an Associate Professor. He is currently a subject editor for IET Communications, and a guest editor for the special issue on the IoT for Power Grid on IEEE Internet of Things Journal. He received the best paper award at 2018 IEEE International Conference on Communication Systems, and was invited to present at the best paper sessions at 2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting and 2021 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting.
