Overview
This is an all-invited workshop in honor of the 70th birthday of Prof. Richard D. James, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, University of Minnesota. This symposium celebrates his leadership in the study of phase-transforming materials. Through his 44 years research, he developed continuum theories to understand the hysteresis of phase transformations, and formation of compatible microstructure. The mathematical approaches underlie the material development for shape memory alloys and multiferroic materials with broad applications. Here we would like to gather mechanicians, mathematicians and physicists working in various areas of materials science, mechanical engineering and applied mathematics to share recent advances in the development of continuum theories and mathematical models for phase-changing materials.
