About HKUST Community Musical

The HKUST Musical tradition goes way back and has had a major impact on all those who have participated. No matter whether a performer, a designer, a musician, backstage crew or simply an audience member, everyone has a joyful memories of their experience and there is always great excitement to know when and what the next musical will be. From our first production in 2009, The Wedding Singer (Hong Kong premiere), to recent hits like Wonderful Town and Singin' in the Rain, musicals have taken audiences on unforgettable journeys. Exploring the crazy world of business in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and traveling back in time to the '50s with Grease, each show has left us laughing, singing, and dancing in delight.

In 2024, the Shaw Auditorium Unit re-launched the University Musical series with a renewed focus on engaging the broader community, and announced its first-ever production of the HKUST Community Musical – The Music Man by Meredith Willson. This performance, staged at the Shaw Auditorium in March 2024, provided an even more captivating experience for the audience. In 2025, the Shaw Auditorium Unit is thrilled to present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a witty, award-winning production that features an array of quirky characters, vibrant music, and innovative staging in March 2025. This show promises a delightful fusion of humor, heartwarming moments, and engaging melodies, offering a truly unforgettable theatrical experience suitable for the audience.
