HKUST IP Seminar - Bright Ideas, Strong Barriers: A Patenting Masterclass

The IP seminar will be divided into two sessions. Each session will be finished in around 25 min, with 5 min Q&A session:

(1) IP Basics, Innovation Oversight and Tips: Patent 101 and Top IP Mistakes By Start-Ups & Entrepreneurs

Pauli will provide an overview of the fundamentals of IPs especially patents, drawing attention to commonly overlooked aspects, and sharing invaluable tips to avoid pitfalls especially for inventors and entrepreneurs.

(2) MedTech & Healthcare Hurdles​: IP Challenges for Innovations in the GBA and China​

Jennifer unveils the unique IP challenges for innovations face in the dynamic landscapes of the GBA and China. She will also showcase the power of a well-thought-out IP strategy in safeguarding against future complications.

Ms. Jennifer Che, J.D.
President and Managing Director at Eagle IP

Ms. Jennifer Che, J.D., is President and Managing Director at Eagle IP, a boutique patent firm in Greater China with offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Jennifer Che is an MIT graduate and US patent attorney with a deep, multi-faceted understanding of cross-border (US-China) patent matters and the biopharmaceutical industry. She has over 20 years’ experience working in Boston, one of the most vibrant biopharma hubs in the world. Jennifer built her career at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, an 80 billion USD S&P 500 pharmaceutical company, for over a decade before jumping into the start-up world. Most notably, Jennifer served as Vice President of IP and legal affairs at Axcella Therapeutics (a Flagship Pioneering company) and helped build its IP portfolio from the ground up. At Eagle IP Jennifer helps clients protect their innovations with strategic, global, and cross-functional IP strategies. She also helps international clients execute smart patent strategies in Greater China. Jennifer holds a chemistry degree from MIT and her US law qualifications (Juris Doctor - JD) from Suffolk Law in Boston.

Ms. Pauli Wong
Principal and Chinese Patent Attorney at Eagle IP

Ms. Pauli Wong is Principal and Chinese Patent Attorney at Eagle IP, a top-tier patent specialist firm based in Hong Kong. Pauli has been with Eagle IP for over 9 years, overseeing the drafting team, helping local and international clients with patent drafting and prosecution in a wide range of technology areas including medical devices, robotics, biotechnology, biology, and more, and advising them on IP rights, portfolio management, and global filing strategy. Before jumping into the patent world, Pauli has gained rich portfolio of technical experience in R&D, method development, and validation in the areas of microbiology, molecular biology, proteomics, and chemistry from her previous positions at CK Life Sciences Limited. Pauli holds an MPhil degree in Molecular Microbiology and a BSc degree in Animal and Plant Biotechnology both from HKU. Pauli loves working with Hong Kong innovators to build up good IP portfolios that meet their business needs. She has proven herself to be a fast learner of new technologies, conscientious in patent prosecution, strategic in the way she works with businesses, and generous in how she takes care of her clients.
