Synopsis
In the early 20th century, in a Maine coastal village, carnival barker Billy Bigelow impulsively marries millworker Julie Jordan, but their union soon leads to hardship as they lose their jobs and struggle with poverty. Desperate to provide for his family, Billy is drawn into a robbery that ends in tragedy and his death. Granted a chance at redemption, he passes into the other world, and he is given one last chance to see the daughter he never knew, now 15 years old and about to graduate from high school, to offer her hope and strength as she faces her own challenges. “Carousel” revolves around two couples, with contrasting relationships, exploring themes of life, love, death, forgiveness, and eternity in a bittersweet musical that celebrates family, resilience, and the enduring power of redemption.

About HKUST Community Musical
The HKUST Musical tradition goes way back with a joyful collective memory, for which there is always a special place in the hearts of many music and drama enthusiasts in the University Community. It brings together extraordinary talents to create an exceptional Broadway musical experience.
From our first production in 2009, The Wedding Singer (Hong Kong premiere), to recent hits like Wonderful Town and Singin' in the Rain, musicals have taken audiences on unforgettable journeys. Exploring the crazy world of business in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and traveling back in time to the '50s with Grease, each show has left us laughing, singing, and dancing in delight.
In 2021, HKUST unveiled the stunning Shaw Auditorium—a cutting-edge venue that has redefined the performing arts landscape on campus. With this exciting development, the Shaw Auditorium Unit proudly brought back the musical The Music Man in March 2024 and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in March 2025, extending its reach to the broader community. Building on this success, the Shaw Auditorium Unit continues to uphold and expand the legacy of the musical tradition for the HKUST Community.
In 2026, the Shaw Auditorium Unit will present Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel, an award-winning musical. A winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for the best Musical and the Tony Award for the Best Revival of a Musical, it features the poignant bonding of complex characters, emotionally vibrant music, and innovative staging, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption for all.
