Synopsis

In the early 20th century, in a Maine coastal village, carnival barker Billy BIGELOW impulsively marries millworker Julie JORDAN, but their union soon leads to hardship as they lose their jobs and struggle with poverty. Desperate to provide for his family, Billy is drawn into a robbery that ends in tragedy and his death. Granted a chance at redemption, he passes into the other world, and he is given one last chance to see the daughter he never knew, now 15 years old and about to graduate from high school, to offer her hope and strength as she faces her own challenges. “Carousel” revolves around two couples, with contrasting relationships, exploring themes of life, love, death, forgiveness, and eternity in a bittersweet musical that celebrates family, resilience, and the enduring power of redemption.

About HKUST Community Musical

The HKUST Musical tradition goes way back with a joyful collective memory, holding a special place in the hearts of many music and drama enthusiasts in the University Community. It brings together extraordinary talents to create an exceptional Broadway musical experience.

From our first production in 2009, The Wedding Singer (Hong Kong premiere), audiences have enjoyed unforgettable journeys through classics such as Wonderful Town, Singin' in the Rain. Exploring the crazy world of business in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and to the '50s with Grease. Each show has left us laughing, singing, and dancing in delight.

In 2024, the University Musical series has been re-launched with a renewed focus on engaging the broader community. Recent productions include classical yet entertaining Meredith WILSON's The Music Man (March 2024) and witty The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (March 2025), were staged in the Shaw Auditorium on campus, and offering new experiences to the audience.

This year, the Shaw Auditorium Unit will present Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel, an award-winning musical that tells a powerful story of hope, redemption and love. It's emotionally vibrant music and innovative staging will bring an unforgettable theatrical experience for all.

 

Remarks

• Performed in English with Chinese and English surtitles.
• Duration: approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes (with intermission).
• Appropriate for ages 12 and up, due to some adult themes. Children under 6 will not be admitted. 
• Audience is recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the performance starts. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable break.
• The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the program, performers and seating arrangement. In case of dispute, the decision of the organizer shall be final.

故事簡介

二十世紀初期的緬因州海岸小鎮，嘉年華攬客員比利．畢格羅（Billy BIGELOW）與紡織女工茱莉．佐敦（Julie JORDAN）墮入愛河並倉促成婚。然而失業與貧困接踵而來。為了養家糊口，比利鋌而走險行劫不幸喪生。比利在另一個世界獲得機會重返人間一天，得見自己素未謀面，即將高中畢業的十五歲女兒，為她帶來希望和力量，幫助她面對人生的挑戰。《Carousel》這部苦中帶甜的音樂劇，探討生命、愛、死亡、寬恕與不朽，刻畫生命的考驗與寬恕，並歌頌家庭與情感。

關於科大音樂劇

香港科技大學音樂劇自誕生以來，憑藉著歡樂的氛圍和出色的製作讓觀眾記憶猶新，並在科大音樂及戲劇愛好者的心中佔一席位。

自2009年首部作品《The Wedding Singer》（香港首演）起，至近年的《Wonderful Town》及《Singin'in the Rain》，科大音樂劇匯聚學生、教職員和校友的才華於一堂，將百老匯的魅力帶到校園。我們曾在《How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying 》中探索瘋狂且殘酷的商業世界，也於《Grease》中回五十年代一起搖滾，每場演出都為觀眾帶來愉悅的體驗，讓觀眾親歷其境。

從2024年起，科大音樂劇於逸夫演藝中心上演，逸夫演藝中心團隊於2024年3月呈獻經典音樂劇 Meredith Willson 的《The Music Man》，及於2025年3月帶來《The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee》，進一步將科大音樂劇延伸至更廣泛的社群。

今年，科大音樂劇將呈現另一經典Rodgers & Hammerstein的《Carousel》於舞台。這部屢獲殊榮的作品講述一個關於希望、救贖與愛的動人故事，透過充滿感染力的情節和音樂，及創新的舞台設計，為觀眾帶來難忘的劇場體驗。
