Background

Hong Kong (HK) has been rated as having the most connected, reliable, frequent and well-maintained public transport network against other cities in the world. However, the local street-level pollution and smog from transport systems, especially from motor vehicles, has also been one of the major air quality challenges in HK. Therefore, a clean and low carbon fuel for motor vehicles is essential to control air pollution and carbon emission for a better HK.

Bio ethanol is a climate friendly and clean fuel for a sustainable transport system. New technology creating bio ethanol from corps such as sugar cane, corns, and sweet sorghum is now available. Bio ethanol offers up to 90% cut in added carbon to the atmosphere and is performing significantly better than Euro VI diesel in terms of road side emission control. Bio ethanol can be used both as a pure fuel for heavy trucks and buses or as a bio ethanol-blended fuel with petroleum fuels for passenger cars.

Objectives

The roundtable is to provide a platform for stakeholders from government, Institutions and industry, e.g. bus companies, fuel companies, and vehicle manufacturers etc., to address the transport pollution issues and explore potential directions for a clean and low carbon transport system. Below topics will be focused:

  • Essentials for a truly clean and low carbon transport system
  • Future of bio-renewables from business and environmental perspectives
  • Development of sustainable transport systems for HK and mainland China
