HKUST-BDR Joint Research Institute (HBJRI) is going to organize an online Frontier Technologies Seminar on 11 May 2023 (Thursday). Prof. Dianxun XIAO from the Thrust of Sustainable Energy and Environment, Function Hub, HKUST(GZ) and Prof. Yiding JI from the Thrust of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, System Hub, HKUST(GZ), will give seminars on topics on "Resonant Phenomena Analysis and Suppression of Servo Systems" & “A formal methods approach to safe and interpretable reinforcement learning with applications to robot task planning” to researchers in Bright Dream Robotics (BDR), HKUST & HKUST (GZ).

 

All UST staff and students are welcome to attend the seminar and explore potential ways of collaboration on mutually-interested research projects.

 

Topics that BDR is interested in are as follows:

- Construction Robotics (typically, integration of control, actuation, and vision)

- AI & Big data

- Building Technologies & Intelligent Manufacturing

Dianxun Xiao
the Thrust of Sustainable Energy and Environment

Dianxun Xiao, Ph.D., received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology and his doctorate degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from McMaster University in Canada. After graduation, he continued his postdoctoral research at McMaster University. He is currently an assistant professor and doctoral supervisor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Dr. Xiao has been engaged in researching high-performance permanent magnet synchronous motor drives for a long time. He has published more than 40 high-level papers, including 12 tier-I SCI journal articles with the first or corresponding authorship, and has authorized several Chinese and USA patents. He has led or participated in 11 Chinese or Canadian government research projects and 4 industrial-sponsored projects. Dr. Xiao is currently the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification and the session/topic chair of several internationally reputational conferences.

Yiding Ji
the Thrust of Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Yiding Ji is an assistant professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems Thrust, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)), China, also affiliated with Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China. He received bachelor's degree of Electrical Engineering and its Automation from Tianjin University, China in 2014, then master's degree and doctor's degree of Electrical and Computer Engineering both from the University of Michigan, United States, in 2016 and 2019, respectively, under the supervision of Professor Stéphane Lafortune. From 2019 to 2020, he was a postdoc researcher at Boston University in United States, where he collaborated with Professor Christos Cassandras and Professor Calin Belta. In early 2021, he started as a research scientist at the future of automation group of Siemens Corporation in United States. He returned to academia and joined HKUST(GZ) in late 2021. His research interests lie in the intersection of formal methods, control systems and machine learning, focusing on analyzing and designing safe, reliable and trustworthy cyber physical systems. He is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Community on Discrete Event Systems. He has served as reviewers for multiple top academic journals and conferences.
