Frontier Technologies Seminar Series #2 by HKUST-BDR Joint Research Institute
2:15pm - 4:35pm
Online

HKUST-BDR Joint Research Institute (HBJRI) is going to organize an online Frontier Technologies Seminar on 11 March 2020 (Wed). 3 faculty from HKUST (Bio attached) will give seminars on topics in Construction and Robotics to researchers in Bright Dream Robotics (BDR) and HKUST.

Faculty and researchers of HKUST are welcome to attend the seminar and explore potential ways of collaboration on mutually-interested research projects.

Topics that BDR is interested in are as follows:

  • Construction Robotics (typically, integration of control, actuation, and vision)

  • AI & Big data

  • Building Technologies & Intelligent Manufacturing

6 projects have already been selected in the first 2 rounds of call for proposal, and 3 of them are going to be completed in this season. The Institute is currently accepting expression of interest for the next round of Call for Proposal (Batch 3). If you would like to know more about the seminar or call for proposal, contact the institute at hbjri@ust.hk .

Topics of the Seminar

- "HKUST Robotics Institute Introduction" by Prof. Michael Yu WANG (in Mandarin)

- "Computational and Manufacturing issues in complex architectural projects" by Prof. Ajay JONEJA (in English)

- "Human-Centric, Healthy, Comfortable, Highly Efficient, Energy-Saving Smart Buildings" by Prof. Huihe QIU (in Mandarin)

2 more seminars will be organized on 18th and 25th March. Stay tuned!

Event Format
Speakers / Performers:
Prof. Michael Yu WANG
Director, HKUST Robotics Institute ;Director, HKUST-BDR Joint Research Institute ; Chair Professor, MAE & ECE, HKUST

Prof. Wang obtained his undergraduate degree from Xian Jiaotong University in China, his M.S. degree from Pennsylvania State University, and his Ph.D. from the Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining HKUST in 2015, he has worked as the Engineering Faculty at University of Maryland, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and National University of Singapore.

Prof. Wang’s research focuses primarily on robotics, autonomous systems, manufacturing automation and additive manufacturing, with over 300 technical publications in these areas. Prof. Wang has received Best Paper Award at the IEEE Robotics and Automation Conference in 2001, Best Paper Award at the International CAD Conference and Best Paper Award at the ASME Mechanisms and Robotics Conference in 2007, Best Information Paper Award at the IEEE Conference in 2009 and ASME Machine Design Award in 2013.

Speakers / Performers:
Prof. Ajay JONEJA
Professor, ISD & IEDA, HKUST

Prof. Ajay Joneja has been working in applications of CAD/CAM and Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DfMA) since he joined as a faculty in HKUST in 1993. In most cases, the solutions involve a convergence of computational geometry and differential geometry. In recent years, he has worked on Architectural geometry, and in particular, on problems of shape modification for DfMA in building facades. While the research has been published in top academic journals, he has also overseen practical application of this research in real world projects through his (co-founded) architectural BIM consulting company, Sane Form Ltd., working on buildings of leading architects including Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, SOM, Frank Gehry, Ma Yansong and Aedas.

Speakers / Performers:
Prof. Huihe QIU
Head and Professor, MAE, HKUST ; Director, Building Energy Research Center, FYTRI

Professor Qiu received his Ph.D. degree from Institute of Fluid Mechanics, LSTM, at the University of Erlangen, Germany. He is Head of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) and Director of the Building Energy Research Center (BERC) of the HKUST Nansha Fok Ying Tung Graduate School. Professor Qiu has extensive experience in the research of experimental fluid dynamics, multiphase flows and heat transfer, optical diagnostics and flapping wing aerodynamics. He is Editor-in-Chief/Associate Editor of 4 international journals and a member of the editorial board for more than 10 international journals. He is the recipient of the Best Paper Award of Institute of Physics (IOP) in 1994; Mosaic (2007) Measurement Science & Technology, Institute of Physics (IOP); Philips Outstanding Paper Award in ICEPT-HDP2012; Best Paper Award in 2nd World Congress on Mechanical, Chemical, and Material Engineering (2016); Best Paper Award, 4th International Conference on Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow (2017); Best Paper Award, 5th World Congress on New Technologies (2019); and the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award: The State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA) (1989); and The Scientific and Technological Achievement Award from the State Education Commission (1988).
