ABSTRACT
The drug delivery systems based on polymers are far from satisfied therapeutic effects due to many obstacles. Aiming to achieve improved therapeutic performance and high biosafety, some natural amino acid or hydroxyl acid based polymer libraries have been developed via condensation method. These polymers could be formulated into nanoparticles or 3-D hydrogels as drug carriers for treating of a variety of diseases. With the specially selected monomers and designed structure, some polymers and monomers are bioactive and could provide additional therapeutic effect for certain diseases. The structure-function relationship of these polymers was also systematically investigated and the results indicated that the structure may have profound effect on physicochemical properties and therapeutic performance. Furthermore, these findings provide insights for development of some other new biosafe and therapeutic biomaterials.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Jun Wu is a full professor of biomedical engineering at Sun Yat-sen University. He received his B.S. degree from Nanjing University and his M.S. degree from Stony Brook University. In 2011, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University. After that, he was a postdoc researcher at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and MIT, working with Professor Robert Langer and Professor Omid Farokhzad. Before joining SYSU in 2015 as a full professor, he was an instructor at HMS. His research is interdisciplinary and combines biomaterials, polymers, nanotechnology, drug delivery and tissue engineering for the development of novel functional polymers/biomaterials for treating cancers, diabetes, wound healing and bone regeneration. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 publications in high impact journals. Till now, he has also applied for more than 30 patents.
