Aging Initiative Seminar: Science, Technology and Aging
10:30am - 12:00pm
IAS Lecture Theater, Lo Ka Chung Building, Lee Shau Kee Campus, HKUST
Abstract
Between 2000 and 2050, the world’s population over 60 years will increase from 605 million to 2 billion. We live in a time where technology is deeply integrated into our lives and its potential can change how we perceive traditional models of elderly care. Not everyone ages equally - some are relatively healthy while others have a high disease burden. To prepare for an aging population with changing demographics and health disparities, health systems should take advantage of advances in biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, and mobile technologies in empowering the elderly to become productive members of society with a sense of community, and purpose. Dr Wang will discuss the epidemiology of aging populations and explore how medical innovations across the continuum of care can maximize future health potential, improve chronic disease management, and foster health behavioral change for individuals and populations.
