Tap Dance Workshops

the Jockey Club Global Graduate Tower (GGT) in room G19 Multi-Purpose room

The workshop will teach participants how to tap dance and explore the history and development of the art form through videos and lectures with Ms. Mandy Petty, a professional artist who has been involved in the performing arts industry for over 40 years and has received the 25th Hong Kong Dance Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. Participants will learn to use their shoes to create various sounds and rhythms, as well as different dance combinations.

Lesson 1: Feb 21, 2025 

Part 1: How to use the shoes to make simple sounds and rhythms (1 & 2 sounds): Heel, ball, stamp, step, flap, shuffle, ball change, pick-up

Part 2: What is Tap Dance and how did it begin?

Part 1: Review steps from L1 and begin to combine them

Part 2: The Copasetics and The Cotton Club
 


Lesson 3: Mar 7, 2025

Part 1: Review steps from L1 & L2 and combine in longer combinations.

Part 2: Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly
 


Lesson 4:  Mar 14, 2025

Part 1: Continue to review steps from earlier classes, adding new vocabulary and combinations. Stylised combinations from musicals such as 42nd Street, Crazy for You and Anything Goes

Part 2: Musicals featuring Tap Dance

Part 1: Continue to review steps from earlier classes, adding new vocabulary and combinations. Stylised combinations from musicals such as 42nd Street, Crazy for You and Anything Goes

Part 2: Current international practitioners of Tap Dance

 

Lesson 6: Apr 11, 2025

Part 1: Recap and perform all steps and combinations learnt throughout the course, to family and friends.

REMARKS 

  • This is a recognized event in the “Personal Enrichment & Community Service” category under the "Self-directed Experience" of HMAW1905: Behavioral Foundations of University Education: Habits, Mindsets, and Wellness. To receive 7.5 hours, you must attend the event in full and miss no more than 10 mins.

  • Language: English 

  • Fee: Free of Charge

  • Participants are required to submit a refundable deposit of HK$200 (*Cash only), which will be returned upon successful completion of ALL classes. If the participant cannot attend all lessons, the deposit will be forfeited and used to offset the workshop operation expense (e.g. publicity printing)
  • Interested participants are required to submit an online application and complete the payment by visiting Room 203, Shaw Auditorium within one week in order to secure their spot.

  • Quota: 20 (For HKUST students and staff only)

  • The organizer reserves the right in its sole discretion to make changes to the event program without prior notice.

Mandy PETTY

Mandy PETTY has been involved in the Performing Arts industry for 40 years, as a performer, teacher, choreographer, director, and adjudicator. Over recent years, she has added administrative duties to her portfolio, specifically at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, which included appointing staff, arranging scheduling, and supporting students in their development from student to professional, as well as hosting conferences and conducting feasibility studies for future programs. She believes that she has accumulated the required skills to enable her to work in a supervisory role within a team in a large company, and she feels that her sunny disposition, along with her dedication and strong work ethic, serves her well as a leader. She has professional contacts in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Manila, New York, and the UK, having been based in Hong Kong for most of her working career.
