Joint SOSC/ECON Seminar - A View of the Economy From Above: Combining Satellite Imagery, Data Science, and Economics

10:30am - 12:00pm
Online Via Zoom

In this talk, I present my line of research using satellite imagery. In the first part, I discuss about a novel methodology that allows economists and, more broadly, social scientists to monitor important socioeconomic indicators in regions where census or survey data are unavailable. In the second part, I present findings from using nighttime satellite imagery to estimate the effect of recent U.N. sanctions on North Korea’s economy.
